Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a condition that can cause widespread body pain, usually accompanied by fatigue, cognitive disturbance and emotional distress.
Fibromyalgia affects two to five per cent of the population, mainly women, although men and adolescents can also develop the condition. Fibromyalgia usually develops in middle adulthood.
Management
Fibromyalgia symptoms can be effectively managed through a multidisciplinary pain management approach tailored to the individual’s needs.
Active involvement in management with a healthcare team is recommended, adopting self-management strategies such as sleep, hygiene, exercise, pacing and relaxation.
Our youngest Consumer Awareness Group member, Ben Nihill, lives with Fibromyalgia.
He chatted with Hack on triple j's Dave Marchese about the cost of GP visits for young people living with chronic pain.
